Presidential Pets

Many presidents had their own personal pets. Yes, most had cats or dogs. But a few Presidential pets were outstanding.
Did you know…
1. President George Washington gave orders for his groomsmen to brush the     horses teeth in his stables daily.
President George Washington had two favorite horses in the Revolutionary War, ‘Old Nelson’ and ‘Blueskin’. Blueskin was used for non battle situations as “He did not stand fire (the noise of guns shooting) as well.”

2. President Calvin Coolidge and wife Grace had two pet raccoons, Rebecca and Horace, that were originally intended for the presidential stew pot.

3. An alligator was the pet in residence in a white House bath tub during the     presidency of John Quincy Adams.

4. Thomas Jefferson received two bear cubs from Explorer Zebulon Pike as a gift. The cubs stayed on the White House lawn for a while then were sent to a museum in Philadelphia.

5. Andrew Johnson caught White House house mice and kept them as pets during his presidency.

6. Presidents Grover Cleveland and Thomas Jefferson both kept mocking birds     as pets.

7. President Johnson made public relations uproar when he picked up his dogs by the ears.

8. President John Quincy Adams’ wife Louisa kept silkworms in the White House. She used the silk to make her own gowns.

9. President James Buchanan was given an elephant by King Mongut of Thailand Mongut was the king from 1851 to 1868.

10. President Teddy Roosevelt was the inspiration for the Teddy bear when the President would not shoot a bear cub tied to a tree on  a hunt. A toy manufacturer hear the story and created a stuffed toy bear and called it Teddy.

11. President Lyndon Johnson’s wife Claudia was nick named ’Lady Bird’ by her nurse, who said “she was as  pretty as a lady bird!”

12.  President Gerald Ford’s dog, Liberty woke him up in the middle of the night     to go for a walk. While stepping out with the dog, President Ford set off intruder alarms and the Secret Service came running with guns drawn.

This is my first blog entry. So I’ll tell you a bit about myself. My name is Lori Space Day. I am a zookeeper, mother, author, artist, and more. This is my first time blogging on the web, but I am excited by all of the possibilities of communication.

Life is slow right now. The zoo is closed, and the animal babies will come in the spring. Punxsawney said six more weeks of winter. My Jenny Woodchuck is in her winter sleep. I remember when I got that little critter. I raised her since she was a little fluff ball brought in by man who’s dog retrieved her. She is in her hibernation den with her hand picked “husband” Jack. I couldn’t let just any groundhog stay with my Jenny.

Well furry friends that’s all for now.
